Assuring Scraping Success with Proxy Data Scraping

Have you ever heard of "Data Scraping?" Data Scraping is the process of collecting useful data that has been placed in the public domain of the internet (private areas too if conditions are met) and storing it in databases or spreadsheets for later use in various applications. Data Scraping technology is not new and many a successful businessman has made his fortune by taking advantage of data scraping technology.

Sometimes website owners may not derive much pleasure from automated harvesting of their data. Webmasters have learned to disallow web scrapers access to their websites by using tools or methods that block certain ip addresses from retrieving website content. Data scrapers are left with the choice to either target a different website, or to move the harvesting script from computer to computer using a different IP address each time and extract as much data as possible until all of the scraper's computers are eventually blocked.

Thankfully there is a modern solution to this problem. Proxy Data Scraping technology solves the problem by using proxy IP addresses. Every time your data scraping program executes an extraction from a website, the website thinks it is coming from a different IP address. To the website owner, proxy data scraping simply looks like a short period of increased traffic from all around the world. They have very limited and tedious ways of blocking such a script but more importantly -- most of the time, they simply won't know they are being scraped.

You may now be asking yourself, "Where can I get Proxy Data Scraping Technology for my project?" The "do-it-yourself" solution is, rather unfortunately, not simple at all. Setting up a proxy data scraping network takes a lot of time and requires that you either own a bunch of IP addresses and suitable servers to be used as proxies, not to mention the IT guru you need to get everything configured properly. You could consider renting proxy servers from select hosting providers, but that option tends to be quite pricey but arguably better than the alternative: dangerous and unreliable (but free) public proxy servers.

There are literally thousands of free proxy servers located around the globe that are simple enough to use. The trick however is finding them. Many sites list hundreds of servers, but locating one that is working, open, and supports the type of protocols you need can be a lesson in persistence, trial, and error. However if you do succeed in discovering a pool of working public proxies, there are still inherent dangers of using them. First off, you don't know who the server belongs to or what activities are going on elsewhere on the server. Sending sensitive requests or data through a public proxy is a bad idea. It is fairly easy for a proxy server to capture any information you send through it or that it sends back to you. If you choose the public proxy method, make sure you never send any transaction through that might compromise you or anyone else in case disreputable people are made aware of the data.

A less risky scenario for proxy data scraping is to rent a rotating proxy connection that cycles through a large number of private IP addresses. There are several of these companies available that claim to delete all web traffic logs which allows you to anonymously harvest the web with minimal threat of reprisal. Companies such as http://www.Anonymizer.com offer large scale anonymous proxy solutions, but often carry a fairly hefty setup fee to get you going.

The other advantage is that companies who own such networks can often help you design and implementation of a custom proxy data scraping program instead of trying to work with a generic scraping bot. After performing a simple Google search, I quickly found one company (www.ScrapeGoat.com) that provides anonymous proxy server access for data scraping purposes. Or, according to their website, if you want to make your life even easier, ScrapeGoat can extract the data for you and deliver it in a variety of different formats often before you could even finish configuring your off the shelf data scraping program.

Whichever path you choose for your proxy data scraping needs, don't let a few simple tricks thwart you from accessing all the wonderful information stored on the world wide web!

Review: RetailMeNot

More and more I find myself ordering products and services online. Almost every online retailer has a place for ‘promo code’ or ‘coupon codes. You could hunt around on Google for coupon codes only to discovered they have expired or are no longer supported. RetailMeNot.com claims to be the world’s largest coupon source with some 13,000 stores. What I really like about RetailMeNot is the coupon success ratings based on feedback from community members.

The way the extension work is quite simple. When you go to a website of one of the over 13,00 stores in the RetailMeNot database, Firefox will display an alert at the top of your browser window. This alert will inform you there are coupon code(s) avaialble for this retailer and will display the top coupon. There is a ‘View Coupons’ button on the right side which will open a new tab with that retailer’s coupon page on RetailMeNot.

The add-on only had two options, disable the alerts or update database. Also it tracks which sites you have already visited and will only display the alert the first time you have visited that site (during that browsing session).

Quit Clipping. After Hitting 450M Visits, Coupon Site RetailMeNot Launches Facebook App With Personalized Deals From Your Likes

Tired of wading through irrelevant newspaper coupons? RetailMeNot doesn’t want you to feel the same way about its massive website. So it’s just launched a Facebook app that recommends coupons you’ll actually use by pulling in your Likes and interests. RetailMeNot is the top coupon site in the US with 450 million visits a year to its 500,000 offers. The app will make sorting through them a breeze and could show off the power of Facebook for personalized e-commerce.

RetailMeNot’s app is simple enough to get mainstream coupon clippers to put down the scissors. First you give it permission to see your Likes, and then you can give it some extra help by selecting a few of your most beloved retailers. RetailMeNot then gives you a personalized feed of coupons. Click one to copy the promo code and visit the site where you’ll redeem it. You can also share a coupon with friends, or save it for later.

Over time, RetailMeNot’s app gets smarter — something your newspaper obviously doesn’t do. It learns from what you check out to better tailor recommendations of the 60,000 retailers it offers coupons for. With its Alerts feature, you can get notified when your favorite stores have new discounts.

Jag Bath, the SVP of Product at RetailMeNot’s parent company WhaleShark Media tells me that rather than being a replacement for its website, the app caters to a group of people who find deal-hunting to be an “inherently social activity”. And since it already has 2.2 million Facebook fans to promote to, gaining traction won’t be tough. It’s all part of Whaleshark’s plan to diversify and adopt the next wave of tech, which is already paying dividends as 20% of traffic now comes from mobile. The company has $300 million in funding and expects total of 450 million total visits and $125 million in traffic, up from 300 million visits and $80 million in revenue in 2011.

The app seems like such a good idea, I’m surprised how few retailers are getting serious about Facebook personalization. There’s a massive trove of data there that’s easy to get permission to access and that can drastically reduce bounce rates.

I think we’re headed squarely in the direction of minimizing the “shopping” experience. Search, category browsing, and decision-making are all exhausting — they just used to be the only ways for people to apply their preferences. But now with rich APIs powering recommendation engines, the choices are a lot closer to choosing themselves. Users are easily distracted. They’re always just one moment of irrelevant content away from going somewhere else. Many times you only get one shot to get them out of the discovery phase and into the conversion flow.

If you only have a single fold of real estate to catch someone’s eye with, don’t take a wild guess about what customers want. RetailMeNot’s got it right with this app. Sure you might lose some users during the permissions step. But if you grab the data and make a smart recommendation, people will remember how you made something stressful a snap, and they’ll come back.

Coupon Site – RetailMeNot Review

Last week Yan had written about RetailMeNot’s launch of a shopping community quoting from this TechCrunch story. After reading those stories and various comments at TechCrunch, I wanted to review RetailMeNot (RMN). RMN is the first coupon site I am reviewing.

RMN certainly does not have a typical coupon website look (cluttered design) but a rather interesting look, though a bit girlish in my books ;). Users rating coupons by indicating if the coupon worked is a brilliant idea. Even though the idea carries a very small execution, the effect of the voting can be seen in Yan’s monthly coupon site ratings, with RetailMeNot at the 2nd position. Also, user’s have the option to submit coupons.

The TechCrunch article notes that RMN features about 71,000 coupons from 13,000 merchants, which sounds very impressive. The success at RMN should also be attributed for not being behind in technology. The Firefox Extension, IGoogle Gadget, Bookmarklet and Mac Widget are some good examples. RMN also uses some of the buzz features popular with websites, such as Tag Cloud, related tags etc.

Being a user driven coupon site, the quality of coupons cannot really be attributed to RMN (good or bad) but should be attributed to its users. I have used their coupons in the past and the coupon ratings there generally seem to be good (meaning, if there is a 60% or more rating, there is a bigger chance of working for you).

Now let’s go back to last Monday’s announcement about the “Community” launch and associated discussions. The TechCrunch story includes a demo video which is about 5 minutes long, with Guy King of RMN. As I was watching the demo, I strongly felt like I have seen this “community” platform somewhere and on digging my bookmarks, it was from socialengine.net. Literally, nothing but a downloaded script, very minimally modified. However for someone watching the video on TechCrunch, Guy King makes it sound like a home grown script and never utters a word about actually buying it. I am not even sure why there needs to be a launch for it. It is just a downloaded script which is being put out in the site to see if it helps them. There is definitely nothing wrong in buying a script (that is for what they are made for), but a 5 minute interview about the script and RMN making it sound like built at home was really silly.

Today going back to TechCrunch to read more comments, this (about socialengine.net) has been discussed in the comments as well. Also there is a message (#35) about coupons for certain merchants being blocked.

Digging (Googling) more into it, there are about 125 merchants, for whom RetailMeNot does not have any real coupon, but has pretentious links, which make you think that you are getting a discount, but all that you (user) do is, help them earn a commission and nothing else. See this page for an example: http://www.retailmenot.com/view/netflix.com (do not forget to read the comments for the 2 “featured discounts”). In my view this is nothing but just a “rip off”.

The introduction of this Community network concept is to “expand” the existing community. To see how big a community they have, I checked their forums; they have 1984 members, with only 16 members having more than 4 posts! So there is no real community, but coupon ratings has been successful as there is no need to log in/sign up to rate a coupon and it does not really consume any time to click that single button.

On the whole, RMN has one strong point - RATED COUPONS and other than that, everything else surrounding RMN is just a buzz.
